Discover Bulgaria

Town and village

Wide beaches and golden sand, but also Thracian ruins, Byzantine fortresses, rock-cut monasteries and legendary capes. Charming landscapes where nature and history are intertwined at every turn.

The story

What to know.

Wide beaches, golden sand and blue water are only the start - Bulgaria's towns and villages are scattered with Thracian sites, Byzantine fortresses, rock-cut monasteries and legendary capes. Charming landscapes where nature and history intertwine at every turn: thousand-year-old churches, monasteries hidden in mountain valleys and distinctive architecture along streets covered by old vines.

Melnik is Bulgaria's smallest official town, tucked at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Its picturesque setting, long history and the layered influence of many cultures have made it one of the most beautiful places in the country. Expect narrow streets, old churches, traditional houses and the unmistakable atmosphere of a place where time has been allowed to settle.

Further north along the coast, Cape Kaliakra carries ruins of tombs, baths and a church - and at 70 m above the water, its high rocks shelter caves that have been turned into a small museum. The cliffs, hidden grottos, the picturesque canyon and the postcard beach of Bolata Bay below make this one of the most romantic stretches of the entire Bulgarian coast.
