The Story
What to know.
Bulgaria's varied terrain - mountains, wetlands, forests and coastline - makes it one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe. Nature reserves and national parks protect everything from ancient forests to rare wetland ecosystems.
The Rusenski Lom and Strandzha nature parks are home to wolves, jackals and one of the last untouched lowland forests in Europe, while the wetlands around Burgas host tens of thousands of migrating birds every spring and autumn.
For anyone who loves the outdoors, a short trip inland from the coast opens up birdwatching, hiking and wildlife spotting that feels a world away from the beach.
